Best of 2008 in Bollywood Cinema

By Amitava Nag • Dec 28th, 2008 •

Dasvidaniya (2008)Year 2008 had been an insipid year as far as cinema is concerned. There were no international movies which took everyone and anyone in their stride and the film festivals were lukewarm. Back home in India, things were not much different. Bollywood also remained more or less un-inspirational. Apart from Jodhaa Akbar and Dostana to a little bit, big budget films didn’t do that well either.
Interestingly, Golmaal Returns became quite a hit in the later part of the year notwithstanding the poor script and indifferent acting. SRK’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Aamir Khan’s Ghajini deserve mention but it is difficult to rate them since both got released only in December, and that too the latter during Christmas. On the critical path, Nandita Das’ Firaaq is worthy for her sincere attempts to analyze the evils of Indian political sphere, not to mention Rituparno Ghosh’s much hyped The Last Lear , a film which tried to project Amitabh Bachchan as a powerful theatre actor of past, but the film fell miserably short of expectations. So it’s a difficult task at hand - to cut out my 5 best Bollywood films of the year. The chances are that some reasonably good films which I saw early on may miss my radar now.
Looking back, I tried to classify the films in five broad genres and find my best pick in each category:

Comedy: Comedy seems to rule the roost to not only medium budget Bollywood films recently but also amongst relatively bigger budget ones. However, unlike Bheja Fry last year there is no single comic film that I have seen which is taut and smart till the end. Dil Kabaddi probably is one which in-spite of its uncanny resemblance with Woody Allen’s Husbands and Wives, sails through quite successfully as a film where marital and sexual tensions are seen by the director from a comic angle. This is supported by an excellent crew of actors.
Romance and youth: Romance probably has been the bread-butter theme of commercial Bollywood films since ages and no wonder this is the broad theme on which majority of Bollywood films are made even today. However, the noticeable paradigm shift has been the emphasis on youth and friendship. Rock On and Dostana are in a sense buddy films of the Hollywood golden era and in showcasing the fact that man-woman love is not the only relished relationship, these films try to be unconventional. However, the one which mingled both of them with reasonable success by bringing a sweet and lovable lead couple is Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. We can complain about its placid story telling form as well as the run-of-the-mill end. But, surely it evoked quite a bit of youthful energy on the screen which makes you wish you were young.
Contemporary reality: There has been this sudden urge amongst Bollywood film makers lately to make films on terrorist activities, bomb blasts, secret missions and so on. These are slightly different form their predecessor patriotic films like Border for example. This year as well we have quite a handful of such movies. Mumbai Meri Jaan on the series of seven bomb blasts on the Suburban Railway in Mumbai in 2006 and A Wednesday on the stylish narration of a Police Commissioner about a particular Wednesday deserve mention. To me Aamir stands out above the two in its rendering of gasped fear of an individual where belonging to a specific religion makes him a prey to all adverse interests. The film’s gripping finale adds to the taut storyline and questions the audience’s position in the socio-political Indian milieu.

Gangster: If you have seen Sarkar, then you will be tempted to see Sarkar Raj and believe me you won’t be disappointed. But like many trilogy predecessors, the second film also suffers from the problem of being repetitive - the former one stands out as a more solid one. However, there is a different take on this whole mythical posturing of the concept of the Don in Mithya. A brilliant Ranvir Shorey notwithstanding, this film attempts to break a number of clichéd concepts and once viewed in conjunction with Shahrukh Khan’s Don or Amitabh Bachchan’s Sarkar Raj, you can make out the difference - the screen is big, whether you will put the characters bigger than the screen is the question.
Philosophical: The best Bollywood film of 2008 to me is Dasvidaniya. This is a story that deals with the life of a common man who has only 3 months left in his life and he suddenly realized he never ‘lived’ for the past thirty-seven years. So begins a journey through thick and thin and it takes the audience with it for the ride. Heart-wrenching and deeply philosophical at times this film probably lacks somewhat in the director’s vision about the ultimate end, and also probably because Vinay Pathak in the lead at times became very stereotyped and predictable in his histrionics. In this age of growing unrest a film like this surely makes us slow up a bit and ponder about our own ambitions and wish-lists. Bravo!
As I conclude there are two things which need special mention. Almost every Bollywood film that I saw in 2008 is an ‘influence’ (read copy) of some foreign film (be it Hollywood or European or even Korean). Most of the young film-school influenced film-makers using their access to world cinema are trying to put up something ‘desi’. No harm in it as long as the adaptations are good and we don’t get bored or we start seeing the originals far too often (sic)!

Most of the films that I watch in theatres these days happen to be in the Fame Multiplex in South Kolkata which is at walking distance from my home. I cannot comment on the other halls, but here, before every film all the viewers have to rise to their feet as the national anthem starts on the screen, courtesy BharatBala Productions. Probably for most of us, it is an emotional moment. As the year comes to an end and we ruminate on the repeated attacks on this great country we are proud to be born in, I look back - ‘Mera Bharat Mahan’.

HAPPPY NEW YEAR...WELCOME 2009..

Long Live Aamir...!!

What a Movie? What a Blast? LONG LIVE THE KING..... LONG LIVE AAMIR KHAN...
Wonderful movie and what a beautiful presentation of the character suffering from a disease like "Short Term Memory Loss"..No where in the movie we find Aamir imitating Suriya...Suriya has also done it fantastically in the Tamil Version....Aamir has his own style...way Ahead of anybody in BollyWood...
The movie proceeds in flashbacks and present...just like the Brazillian classic CITY OF GOD....credit goes to Murgdoss. The movie is bit lengthy above 3hrs and the way Murgdoss has Fevicoled the audience to their seats needs applause.....
Asin is Like a Breeze... Wonderful performance... the scene wher she boast of her affair with Sanjay Singhania is really hillarious and I heared the whole Audi 2 enjoying.. while the scene wherin she sells off her car for Aamir and when she give the money to Aamir for his mothers treatment, bring water in the eyes and then the deadly scene.... creates havoc.
Ravat as Ghazini, bring fear... good one.. I guess it is the first time in the history of Bollywood that the title of a Movie is the name of the Villian...Ravat has always been a woondefull actor... remember Asvatthama in mahabharata tele-serial... and the Sardar cricketer in Lagaan.... Ravat has been equally successfull in his Haryanvi accent as the main villian Ghazini....
AR Rehmaan... What to say ? Naam hi Kafi hai.... behka, and bachchu are on the Top of the Chart....
To sum up.... Aamir is Aamir ...... Always Ahead...Murgdass... You Rocked Bollywood.....Asin ..Welcome in the world of Aishwary s,, Ranis...Kareenas...Kajols.......Welcome to Bollywood.....

BOXING DAY ! Have Fun..

The Day of Fun... The Day of Fulttos Masti and Shopping.. When I was in school, this was the day when I used to have most fun with my christian friends. A cricket match with the Christian colony was permanent every year. What A FUN? Yummy cakes prepared by Mary auntie... Yummy...

Boxing Day dates back to the Roman festival Saturnalia from which the practice of giving gifts to employees originates. In England, it was common practice for the servants to carry boxes to their employers when they arrived for their day's work on the first working day after Christmas. Their employers would then put coins in the boxes as special end-of-year gifts.
This can be compared with the modern day concept of Christmas bonuses. The servants carried boxes for the coins, hence the name boxing day. It was also seen that because the staff had to work on such an important day as Christmas by serving the master of the house and his family, they were given the following day off. As servants were kept away from their own families to work on a traditional religious holiday and were not able to celebrate Christmas dinner.

In Australia and Canada, Boxing Day is primarily known as a shopping holiday, and a time where stores have sales, often with dramatic price decreases. For many merchants, it has become the day of the year with the greatest revenue. In recent years, this has been expanded to " Boxing Week' . While Boxing Day is actually on 26 December, many retailers who hold Boxing Day Sales will run the sales for several days before or after 26 December, often up to New Year's Eve.
In some areas of Canada, particularly in Atlantic Canada and parts of Northern Ontario, most retailers are prohibited by law from opening on Boxing Day. In these cases, any sales specifically scheduled for December 26 are moved to the 27th.

TAKE A BREAK MAN.... BOX ..BOX ...BOX...

BARACK OBAMA---- The Making of History

Full text of President-elect Barack Obama's victory speech

Wednesday, November 05, 2008 11:39 AM (Chicago, Illinois) President-elect Barack Obama's victory speech in Chicago as released by his campaign.

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.

It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled - Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.

It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.

I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain. He fought long and hard in this campaign, and he's fought even longer and harder for the country he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him and Governor Palin for all they have achieved, and I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead.

I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on that train home to Delaware, the Vice President-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.

I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family and the love of my life, our nation's next First Lady, Michelle Obama. Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House. And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother is watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight, and know that my debt to them is beyond measure.

To my campaign manager David Plouffe, my chief strategist David Axelrod, and the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics - you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to get it done.

But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to - it belongs to you.

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington - it began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.

It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give five dollars and ten dollars and twenty dollars to this cause. It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy; who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep; from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on the doors of perfect strangers; from the millions of Americans who volunteered, and organized, and proved that more than two centuries later, a government of the people, by the people and for the people has not perished from this Earth. This is your victory.

I know you didn't do this just to win an election and I know you didn't do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime - two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century. Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us. There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage, or pay their doctor's bills, or save enough for college. There is new energy to harness and new jobs to be created; new schools to build and threats to meet and alliances to repair.

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you - we as a people will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government can't solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking this nation the only way it's been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

What began twenty-one months ago in the depths of winter must not end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek - it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers - in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people

Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House - a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, "We are not enemies, but friends...though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection." And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world - our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To those who would tear this world down - we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security - we support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright - tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.

For that is the true genius of America - that America can change. Our union can be perfected. And what we have already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that's on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing - Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons - because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America - the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs and a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.

When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.

She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We Shall Overcome." Yes we can.

A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves - if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people:

Yes We Can. Thank you, God bless you, and may God Bless the United States of America.

Mithun Chakraborthy---- The Legend

Kamal in CHAKPAK.COM
Jan 31, 2008
Mithun: A paradoxical Phenomenon
India is a very mysterious land and it is also just as varied. You have more than 100 languages and as many racial equivalents. In a land so rich it is absolutely impossible to find any chance of agreement on any single issue. The query here is who would be crowned the best star actor in this culturally rich diversity. The names that spring to your mind are many. There is Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Kamal Hassan, Dilip Kumar and finally Mithun Chakraborty, not to exclude Uttam Kumar the predecessor king of Bengali cinema. Now no one can deny they need to see how the racial question divides India. The northern Indians have never accepted either Bengali or Southern male stars, whatever the persona or talent. While Hema Malini,`Vyjanti Mala and Sharmila Tagore have ruled the box office, no one other than Mithun from regional cinema has ever made into the top three coveted male star positions, as far as box office is concerned never mind the artistic merits of Pyar Jukhta Nahin and Disco Dancer, they were super hits. Mithun Chakraborty defies this so called bigotry as he was born of regional cinema and then despite his Bengali accent and looks, became one of the top most star in mainstream Bollywood without having to resort to the charity or support of Yash Chopra or Ramesh Sippy. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan made their super hits and all the quality movies with Sippy’s or Chopra’s. In this way Mithun is a paradox and enigma, as he was labelled a poor man’s Amitabh, despite Jaya Bachchan saying in 70s that he was more talented than Amitabh Bachchan and that is on record. Now looking at the resume no other actor has a movie like Mrigaya-The Royal Hunt, and no one ever will have the courage either in Hollywood or Bollywood to attempt that, in fact it seems to have inspired Apocalypto, it’s a tribute to Mrinal Sen, Mithun Chakraborty and Mamta Shanker, which is unique in the world of cinema, even if you disregard the three national awards he won on the basis of his talent, rather than by influencing the jury’s like Hum Tum and Black, which has become rife today, in fact national awards have become a joke in last few years, but he and Sanjeev Kumar won them when they were genuine. Hum Tum was a second rate version of Harry Met Sally done by a second rate Sharukh Khan copycat Saif Ali Khan, who landed a national award just as Amitabh Bachchan did in Black, a copy of Miracle Worker the great movie about Helen keller from the 60s, if anyone deserves an award in black it’s the child artist who some how managed a natural performance despite the pretentiousness which engulfed black. How this award was attained only god can answer that question or the jury. Mithun Chakraborty has proven himself in multi-starrers like Ghulami opposite Dharmendra and Naseer Uddin Shah and in Hum Paanch too, where he was the best again. But also he has the versatility to play a romantic hero as in Prem Pratigya one of the best romantic movie on Indian screen opposite Madhuri Dixit, and that is what deserves to be called a love story, not the designer monstrosities that the Chopra’s make in the name of love. I have yet to see Amitabh Bachchan play a romantic lead himself convincingly. In Kabhi Kabhie and Silsila all he did was frowning and brooding over lost love, in Bemisaal and Jurmana he was angry , name one love story like Aradhana or Amar Prem or Safar where any emotion of love has been ever been expressed by him convincingly in any movie. He was the angry young man of the 70s and had comic timing and his physique suited action roles, which were very popular in the 70s and 80s, but name any great love movies and you, come up with zilch; Kabhi Kabhie belongs to Rakhee, Shashi Kapoor, Sahir and Khayyam. There is no doubt whatever anybody says about Mithun Chakraborty’s dancing talent. He was the best and still is the best dancer Hindi screen has produced. Whether it is ethnic or disco dancing he has always been superb. Just watch him in Zeehale Muskin the song from Ghulaami or song from Disco Dancer. They are all done by him stylishly and flawlessly. Kamal Hassan can dance but Rajesh didn’t even try neither did Dilip sahib, as for Amitabh Bachchan he copied the steps from Albela and Mootilal in every movie, at least he has the grace to admit it, but look at it today, Hrithik is the best now and he can do about five steps which he repeats in every movie hilariously. Mithun chakraborty was never cast by big movie houses he had to content himself with the so called B- grade cinema, yet he made gems like Ghulaami, Prem Pratigya, Gudia and Jallad. His bilinguality is another asset, while no one can deny the richness of Bengali cinema and its diversity, no Hindi actor has contributed to that, but Mithun has to Hindi cinema, that’s a compliment to him and an asset for Hindi cinema. The only other actor from India to rival him is possibly Kamal Hassan with Sadma and Ek Duje Ke Liye but his movies have never got the popular Bollywood appeal and he only appeared in a handful, unlike Mithun Chakraborty who is still working in Hindi mainstream like Elaan and Chingaari, despite Mani Ratnam and Amitabh Bachchan trying to discredit him in Guru he still managed too give the best performance in the fist half. The second half is comprehensible to only people who have no clue as to how a screenplay should be written as the journalist of Madhavan and Mithun chakraborty totally disappear in the second half which was a paradox in itself, as the script seemed to indicate the movie was a battle between the immoral industrialist Guru and the honest journalists Madhavan and Mithun Chakraborty. To glorify Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan had to dub this incompetent actor very shabbily, in an awfully unrealistic speech from a stroke ridden man, Amitabh Bachchan didn’t even give any consideration to the fact that a man suffering from a stroke would be dysphasic or stutter or stammer, he went on his Baghban like sermonising while Mr Ratnam, the director has been left to be a laughing stock at the expense of the Bachchan's, I wonder what Mr Ratnam’s got to say for himself as I believe Mithun Chakraborty has raised some serious accusations about his role being ripped off, which is obvious as he and Madhavan are absent from the court scenes all together, what an idiosyncrasy and how convenient for the Bachchan’s. I feel more sorry for people like them rather than Mithun who has a rich resume with movies like Gudia which were in competition in Cannes (not a single other stars has that merit,) and Titli which again won numerous international awards world over. While Gudia and Titli might not set the Indian box office on fire, their artistic merit like Mrigya-The Royal Hunt is unquestionable. Finally can I inform you that in 1987 a Russian magazine voted Mithun Chakraborty as one of the sexiest men on the planet, I think the only other actor is Dharmendra who was voted so by Italians in the 70s. So much for the North Indian bigotry as to Mithun as a second rate to Amitabh Bachchan, in fact I would think Mr Bachchan should take a bow to Mr Chakraborty and learn a few things from Mrigaya, Gudia and Titli rather then keep making second rate remakes of Hollywood classics like Miracle Worker and godfather as Sarkar and Black, after all it is originality which is immortal rather then even a master fake. I hope this is not taken as a racial or linguistic comparison. I am talking of the talent of an individual rather than creed or religion, language or age.

Time to Think

Outsource Parliament
22 Oct 2008, 0017 hrs IST, Jug Suraiya

Is it time we outsourced our Parliament? With a global recession looming, the need of the hour — as Wipro CEO Azim Premji has stressed — is for every
one, from companies to governments, to be lean and mean. If parliamentary sessions are anything to go by, our MPs are far from being either when it comes to getting on with the job: this year Parliament has met just 32 times (instead of a desirable minimum of 100), the lowest number of sittings since independence. Parliament costs the country Rs 440 crore a year to run. Or rather, to dawdle. This apart, there’s the incalculable loss of cost overruns thanks to legislative delay. Even when Parliament does meet, the event is more akin to a three-ring circus than to a meaningful attempt to tackle the huge and complex problems that beset the world’s most populous democracy: the well of the House is stormed; epithets and more tangible missiles are freely hurled. In a new twist to parliamentary theatre, a Bodo MP from Assam reportedly attempted a ‘striptease’ in the House in order to address — or undress — the issue of intercommunity clashes in the state. At this rate, the Union Cabinet might well redesignate itself as the Union Cabaret. How much longer can we continue to afford such literally criminal dereliction of national duty (125 MPs in the current Lok Sabha are so-called ‘history-sheeters’, and have a record of crime)? Taking a tip from Indian Premier League cricket which sources the best players from around the world, irrespective of nationality, suppose we were to have an Indian Parliamentary League comprising legislators from across the globe with tried-and-tested credentials in honesty and efficiency. Far from being a surrender of our sovereignty, a return to foreign rule, such an arrangement would in fact give Indian voters greater global choice in selecting their representatives. More choice means more democracy and more, not less, freedom. India could have a dream team of legislators which could include an Obama or a McCain (depends on who wins and who loses the US presidential race), a Clinton (Bill or Hillary, take your pick), and a Sarkozy (Carla, not Nicolas). As with all BPO operations, our new Parliament would be elsewhere, i.e. not in India. This alone would entail a huge cutting of costs in terms of ministerial housing. Currently, each mantriji’s Lutyens’ bungalow in New Delhi is valued at over Rs 150 crore. With ministers, along with other MPs, having been outsourced, all this super-prime real estate could be encashed to fund public coffers. The country would also save a vast amount of money on foreign junkets made by our parliamentarians. As all of our new IPL representatives would already be in foreign parts (from where they’d conduct our parliamentary proceedings via teleconferencing and the internet) all those expensive VIP (Visiting Indian Parliamentarian) trips abroad would be obviated. Our new VIPs — Videshi Indian Parliamentarians — would also not require the large-scale security bandobast that disrupts traffic for hours at a stretch and makes daily life a misery for the common citizen. With the IPL VIPs physically located far from New Delhi, the local police would no longer have VIP protection as their first — some would say their only — priority and perhaps could spend some time on preventing and solving crimes. There’s only one snag in the scheme. It’s a truism that all people get the government they deserve. What if our dysfunctional Parliament is nothing more — and nothing less — than a true reflection of the innate anarchy of our Indian ethos in which the rule book exists for one purpose only: that each and every rule in it be flouted, the more flagrantly the better? Would our videshi parliamentarians succumb to anarchy by association and become as unruly as the present lot? That’s the rub. As the old joke goes, when Lee Kuan Yew boasted that in two years he could turn Bihar into Singapore, Lalu responded that in two weeks he could turn Singapore into Bihar. He might have added: And in two days Bihar could turn Lee into a Lalu.

Live Within Your Means....

Hi!
Look... What I have Got for you...
By Emily Wax The Washington Post
October 15, 2008
GURGAON, India — With her flowing hot-pink Indian suit, jangly silver bangles and perky voice, Bhumika Chaturvedi, 24, doesn't fit the stereotype of a thuggish, heard-it-all-before debt collector. But lately, she has had no problem making American debtors cry.For the past three years, Chaturvedi has been a top collection agent at her call center, phoning hundreds of Americans a day and politely asking them to pay up.
With the U.S. financial crisis plunging Americans into debt, her business is one of the fastest-growing sectors in Indian outsourcing. It also is one of the few sectors of outsourcing in India that is still aggressively hiring.Sitting in a narrow cubicle, her headset switched on, Chaturvedi listens every night to increasingly disturbing tales of woe from the other side of the globe."My mortgage payments are just too high, honey. I just can't make the payment this month," a weeping woman with a Southern accent recently told her in response to a call for a $200 credit card payment. "I'm sure y'all heard about the credit crunch and gas prices. I'm flat broke."
"Ma'am, I am here to help you," Chaturvedi calmly said. "Maybe you could make a small payment, $100 or $50, anything that you can."Few places in India absorb and imitate American culture as much as call centers, where ambitious young Indians with fake American accents and American noms de phone spend hours calling people in Indiana or Maine to help navigate software glitches, plan vacations or sell products.
The subculture of call centers tends to foster a cult of America, an over-the-top fantasy where hopes and dreams are easily accomplished by people who live in a brand-name wonderland of high-paying jobs, big houses and luxury getaways. But collection agents at this call center outside New Delhi are starting to see the flip side of that vision: a country hobbled by debt and filled with people scared of losing their jobs, houses and cars."Lately, 25-year-old Americans are telling me that they are declaring themselves bankrupt," said Chaturvedi, raising her eyebrows in shock. "These days the situation is so emotional, so fragile. We have to have so much empathy and patience.""It's like people are totally drowning," said Omkar Gadgil, 24, who goes by the alias Richard Rudy and was a math major in college.
He is brainy and considered the office expert on the intricacies of debt collection. "There has just been years of overspending and now, the crash," he said.In the past, debt-saddled customers often were annoyed by Chaturvedi's calls from the open-air office at Aegis BPO Services. But now they seem depressed, defeated. Even men sob into the phone, several agents said.Chaturvedi's ability to work deftly around the standard line, "The check is in the mail," is now being challenged by clients throwing out new responses: "How do you expect me to pay? This is the worst crisis since the Great Depression."Chaturvedi, using the pseudonym Carol Miller, said she has never seen it so bad. Many of the young employees say they are flabbergasted at just how widespread the financial ruin appears to be.
Talking to so many anguished Americans has taught these agents a lesson: Live within your means.

DRONA or DARAWANA

Hi !
Drona has been released and the hype has been punctured. The way the movie was projected, that is First Super Hero who is here to save the world,First Super Hero with a lady Body Guard; whose Body is guarded by the Super hero himself most of the times, the CGI created special effects and the Joco-serious Villian , with the Jocker attitude and the our Mogambo type costume.....

It was all messed up. Nothing worked..I was convinced from the veery beginning that DRONA would be the greatest Blunder of 2008. C'mon man, Abhi.. doesnt have that X factor ... that persona that guides the audience to the theatres... The Movie has been the delight of the C grade theatres, the very next week; the theatres who are busy all the year round with "Jawani Ki Jalan" type movies.

Infact, Nothing could have saved DRONA.The film lacked the heart of any movie and that is the story.. You cant fool the people again and again by the CGI created shit, when hell lot of Hollywwod is released in Hindi these days, after all they cant create the MAtrix or attempt Lara Croft..then why the shit , again and again, I wonder.
This film should have been made on a 20 cr budget. It could have been achieved by having LESS CGI, more comic book mode, a few more people instead of the awful waste of effort on the Riz Rizaida persona, and instead of Prague a village setting for Drona’s growing up. This would have made the film less of a liability and perhaps even more appealing.
This is what the Boxofficeindia.Com comments:-

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network
Drona looks set to incur huge losses the sort which have never been witnessed before. The film has a budget of 50 crore and release costs of about 6 crore taking the total cost to 56 crore.

As of now the India theatrical share is heading for 10 crore (4 days nett 9 crore, 5 crore share) and Overseas for 3 crore (4 day gross 3 crore, share 1.75 crore) giving it theatrical revenue of just 13 crore and revenue from other sources may be about 10-12 crore. So the total revenue for Drona will be about 25 crore on a cost of 56 crore meaning massive losses in the region of 30 crore.
Drona is certain to be the grandmother of all disasters in terms of losses. Films like Umrao Jaan (2006) and RGV Ki Aag (2007) were amongst the biggest debacles ever but the losses on Drona will be more than the combined losses of those two disasters. Umrao Jaan(2006) lost around 10 crore while RGV Ki Aag(2007) lost around 15 crore. This year another super debacle Love Story 2050 also lost 15 crore but a 30 crore loss is double of we have ever seen before for any film.
Although most of the trade knew Drona was not going to be a huge hit as was being projected prior to release with the makers claiming to make Drona 2 as they were super confident of Drona, the sheer volume of losses has still shocked everyone.

Lets Laugh a Bit

SARDARJI JOKES
So this sardarji is walking the other day and comes across a banana peel on the road.
Can you guess what he might be thinking??
Saala aaj bhi girna padega!!!

A BIHARI IN DELHI
Bihari went to New Delhi for the first time in his life. He went there during the time of Asiad and was zapped to see all these new stadiums, newly constructed roads, flyovers etc etc.
The poor fellow hadn't seen all this ever before. So when he came back to Aligarh people asked him as to how did he likeDelhi, he was too excited and said :
yaar delhi to buhat top ka laga, pura delhi chamak chamak raha tha, sab kuch jagmaga raha tha, sab shine maar raha tha lekin yaar ek cheez hum understand nahin kar paye, yeh itta barka barka speed breaker kahe ko bana diya hai (he couldn't figure out what is a flyover)

INDO-PAK WAR
During the war with Pakistan, Banta used his intelligence to kill many Pakistani soldiers.
He would hide behind the bushes and shout Pakistani names like - Imran Khan etc. and the soldier named Imran Khan would get up to say "I am here !" Then Banta would shoot him down.
This went on till Banta almost wiped out all the soldiers single handedly!Suddenly the Pakistani commander realized that Banta was killing all his soldiers by fooling them.
So he decides to use Banta's own method to kill him and starts calling him names like Banta etc.
Banta realizing that the Pakistani was using his trick, suddenly says "Who called me?" and the Commander gets up to say "I called you."
Banta shoots him down!

Prevention is Better than Cure

Hi ! Everybody.
Sorry Once again... I am late. Infact , this time I'm not resoponsible at all.
My life was hooked up like anything all these days. All around health issues.
First my beloved got down with Typhoid. Doctors,Hospitals and Medicines
was all that kept me frustrated.. APOLLO and ESCORT were the first and the
second to try their hand..Hell lot of expensive medicines followed with No joy.
After 1 long month of apprenticeship the doctor in APOLLO paved way for AIIMS.
Then came the actual trial period of my patience.. long Queue...running from one department to other
and others..Atlast relieved ..."She is fine Now , Need to have the precribed test every 15 days now", the Doctor
said. First time in my life , I came to know the reality of the married life, when there is no one to help you,No assistance Whatsoever. How much , FAMILY matters. I came to know.
It was only 10 days of healthy family.. when my younger brother got down with fever. First we thought it was
a general FLU... but NO , NO, NO.. it was the Devil. I was on my job, when I recievd an email stating... The Tests are postive to DENGUE , needs to hospitalization.. Platelets counts has decreased to 75000.
My BOSS was kind to relieve me instantly. I rushed home. and within an hour I was back to AIIMS in the Emergency. Within the next 4 hrs, got the result of the first test... Platelets..40000, 2nd test 25000, 3rd test 10000.. My GOD. Dobby felt unconscious. Requires Platelets.. No Platelets available.
Around 6am in the morning was anyhow was able to JUGAAD 2 units. Require another 8 units atleast.
The process is so slow in AIIMS that if you are not a man with patience you will die of Brain Hoemorrage,
Days passed...1,2,3,4,5... Platelest increased to 68000.. Doctors relieved us.. Test needs to be done every alternate day, drink lot of water, complete bed rest
Water created miracle.Within 3 days Platelet increased to 140000.. 1,55000, 1,68000..
But the very next Report told a different story.. platelet started decreasing again. Anxiety and fear mounted. My brother got frustrated.. It was not so tough to keep him going.. He never broke up..What a strong man he is ? Checks and checks and Check Ups.. At present undergoing treatment in GangaRam Hospital from one of the Best Doctor in Delhi.. He have diagonosed the disease, as lever infection . Platelest keeps on fluctuating.
In the meantime, My wife has again been attacked by the Typhoid Virus.. AIIMS Back again..

Lesson:- PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE.

Love and Regards

The Zoo

Hi! Guys.. Sorry, I am late.. Infact I was always trying to post some, but I am so lethargic. Immobility and laziness has always been my negative aspects. Anyways, I am back with a new vigour and spirit. Doest the title seem something like the "Essay" that is told to write by the English Teacher, in the Vth Std? Ha. Ha. Ha.... Yeah.. Its similar.

Okay, Lets start. Infact the last few days that I was out of the blog was only because I was on holiday spree. First the Zoo, Yes, it all started with the Delhi Zoo.Wow,In What a pathetic condition it is ? Great... I hated it.

Its the national Zoo, Man? C'Mon grow up.. What have you done to it? Empty lying cages, dirt and Filth ruling the occupants....Plastic foils, and bottles spread all around the Zoo, and see Where the king of the jungle is in , in a 10' X 12' cage..the peacock and the Macao in similar small cages. This is not fair..Its true that these animals are on exhibition and we pay to see them , but its equally true that we want to see them smiling, and not in match boxes with filth all around..
The Delhi Zoo was Established in the year 1959, Delhi National Zoological Park lies near the famous Old Fort. It proves to be an ideal picnic spots, especially in winters, and is spread over an area of 214 acres. National Zoological Gardens of New Delhi houses more than 2,000 species of animals and birds on record but in reality there are no animals other than Deers and veriety of Antelopes, few birds in match boxes, and an Indian elephant,, wait wait wait , Yes. there also was a giraffe, a hippo and a Gharial... sssssssss, the animals in the Great Bombay Circus are more in quantity and there cages are big ,I guess.

Chandra

Amitabh Bachchan----- Is he GOD?

Hi! All
It happenned last night, when there was lot of avail time ( I work in a BPO), when I decided to go through the Blogs of Amitabh.. You will not believe my dear friends but I was overwhelmed by the literary perspicuousness of Amitabh Bachchan. I read all Posts by Amitabh.
I have always been a avid reader of the works of Shree Harivansh Rai Bachchan ji and belonging to UP I have always been proud of the fact that Amitabh is another Ganga Kinare Wala, who has no competitor atleast in his domain. But to my amazement, I discovered that there is no one AAS-PAAS to him in any field.
One of the basic characteristics of the Eastern UP ites is that they dont speak, but when they start, None can stop them. They always try to be different in terms of anything...in short they WANT TO BECOME GOD. The way, they project themself as if they are the Symbol of Unity and Brotherhood, Love, Mercy, Knowledge& Understanding and all the positive words that are the part of this section in the Thesaurus. Sorry, it would be wrong to say; 'Project themself' but this is how they are. Atleast, this is what I have felt and learnt , from my time that I spent in BHU ( Banaras Hindu University). Amitabh Bachchan is no exception.
In his blog in BigAdda.com, Amitabh has written is heart out.. He has provided answers to all the questions and allegations , and have fought back against the monopoly of all those Self proclaimed Intellectuals who dont possess half of the knowledge, understanding or literary skill(if that is the benchmark) of that of Amitabh himself.
Dont Forget, he is His fathers Son......
Be it the reply to Shobha De ( Will anybody tell me, Who the hell She is? and Who says one can be an author writing rubbish? that's what she has done all her life.); or his reply to OUTLOOK, all are wonderful.. Ae Bhai.. dont forget to appreciate his honesty on the Post of Day 79, wherein he appreciate Rajdeep Sardesai for Amar Chita Katha, and Yes, Just look at his approach towards life in the Post of Day 82, my goodness...Hats off! to the skill of blogging.
Please check this , wherein he answers to one of the abusive and malicious comment-
Saharsh
"You write “Sale tu kitna vela hai be bloody big b”
Well unfortunately I have not married your sister so I am afraid I cannot possibly be your ‘sala’, and its probabilities in the future are also extremely remote.
‘Vela’ in Punjabi means free and available.
In your context it is said with malice. Fine. But yes if that is malicious as you mean then I am happy to be ‘vela’ for my fans.
‘bloody big b’ , yes there is still blood in me, much the same kind that flows in you." How many of us can dare to reply to something like this?

It would be an exageration to say this, but Yes, at times you feel as if Amitabhs writings is convinced by Gita.. Does he read Gita? I dont know, But most of his replies, suggestions and thought has close resemblence to the Philosophy of Karmyoga,Jnanyoga..
I request all to go through his Blogs, you will really Enjoy...
" मदिरालय जाने को घर से , चलता है पीने वाला,
किस पथ से जाऊँ असमंजस में है वो भोला भला
अलग अलग पथ बतलाते सब पर में ये बतलाता हूँ
राह पकड़ तू एक चला चल पा जाएगा मधुशाला "
Is he GOD? Still to Answer...................

LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP

Hi!
Back again...Yeah!!! So how are you people out there. Fine........Okay,its Great.
How many of you people have a Financial product say Mutual fund, Insurance policy, Equity with you? How many of you are willing to go for it?
These product help us invest for our future , making our life secured for the days to come. This is what we know about these products.. But how many of us read the offer document before buying an Insurance policy or Mutual fund. I think very few of us.
I was also one among these large community of the 'Agent Believers' when I came across this experience of the life time..

Until very recently I didn't bothered about money.. Life was Bindaas.
Travelling&Enjoying with friends had always been my favourite past time, it was only when I married a couple of months ago ( Read Love marriages in India,,Just Do it ) that I felt that I should have an investment plan for myself.. I called my Bank to know about some of their investment policies and showed interest in Investing a small part of my salary through ECS..

After few days a rep. visited my place, I was impressed by his way of handling things.
I signed the papers provided by the rep.
An MBA working in an MNC,with loads of pressure to meet the target---this has lead to this new breed of MBAs to utter all sort of lies to retain their customers. Hardly they understand the necessity and requirements of their clients, duping them of their hard earned money.

After few days I received a Parcel from a reputed Insurance company. This was a Policy document which I hadn't asked for ..I called the company only to know that I have submitted this documents with my signatures , through my Bank rep.
A one time payment of around 25000/- was also made in my name through the banks credit card, which I didn't possess.. When I called my Bank, they told me that I have opted for this policy as the bank don't have any financial product of their own and they only sell products of other companies.... This all came as a surprise to me as I wasn't ready for it.. I was not given a faintest of the idea that I am buying an Insurance policy.. I was kept in dark . How foolish I was? If I would have read the documents before signing I would have saved myself from all this.
The most important thing now, was to cancel this policy.. I mailed regarding this to the Insurance company and my bank..I got a quick response( the most beautiful thing of MNC).

I was advised of 15 days 'Free-Look period' wherein I can return the document and the contract would become Null and Void.. This is what I did.
I received a call from my bank to give my decision a second thought and they would see that I received my credit card and get the Policy back..But No Way........
I haven't received any credit card whatsoever from my bank as yet nor any mail or Alert in regards to credit card.

So, the lesson of this story is
Read all the documents carefully before signing , You never know you might end up buying something that you haven't opted for.
Take Care,
Good Bye

Love Marriage in India...Just Do it..

Hi!

I am going to speak about Love Marriages in India.. Love marriages in India has always been very difficult, since the time of Laila-Majnu, Shiri- Farhaad & Soni -Mahiwaal.None of them were able to get their beloved. They died fighting the so called Riti & Riwaaz of the Samaj. There stories are wonderfully depicted in Indian movies..But the situation has still not changed . Everyday we come across News articles in Newspapers & electronic media stating Love Birds committing suicide....bringing sorrow & distress in mind and hearts of people , who believe LOVE is the biggest gift of GOD to mankind..

I appeal to all the Loved Couples not to lose heart and never think of taking such a drastic step like suicide...

I want to share my story,, I belong to a staunch Brahmin Family. I was in love to a girl who was from a different caste.. We had a long relationship and we tried tooth and nail, so that our marriage could be arranged, but with no joy... Like all the other loved couples we were afraid of the society..We always felt that if we eloped, it would bring humiliation to our family and hence we thought of commiting suicide.. Yes, thats true.... But destiny had something else for us..

JUST REMEMBER,ONCE YOU ARE MARRIED, NO BODY CARES--YOU MARRIED A GIRL OR A BITCH--- AlWAYS BEAWARE OF RISTEDAARS---- They will allways laugh ,whether you marry a girl or a BITCH....... This is what was told to us by one of our best friend----

We married in an ARYA SAMAJ MANDIR--- It was such a wonderfull experience, I cant explain in words--- I realised the reality of marriages--- MARRIAGES ARE MADE IN HEAVEN--- None of our parents were a part of the ceremony---Just 2 friends as witness--- Thats all you want Yaar, It doesnt make any difference whether you spent crores or 4000.. We are very happy. Yes,Parents are annoyed, but believe me everything would be settled.. Afterall all they want is their children KHUSHI....

So, if you planning to marry your Beloved. DONT WORRY--- Kuch Nahi Hoga Yaar,,,, JUST DO IT.

Regards

Chandra
